A Place Where You Can Actually Relax

After seven years of welcoming guests, we've learned what really matters. It's not about fancy extras or show-home perfection. It's about walking through the door and feeling like you can kick your shoes off and relax straight away.

The cottage has three bedrooms, a comfortable living room, and a separate kitchen that's actually equipped with everything you'll need (not just one battered pan and a dodgy tin opener). There are two bathrooms, so you won't be queuing in the morning, and a lovely front garden where you can sit with your morning coffee.

People often tell us they're surprised by how much thought has gone into the little details. Fresh towels and linens are ready for you, there's proper Wi-Fi throughout, and the kitchen has all the bits and pieces that make self-catering actually work - tea towels, washing-up liquid, a full set of cookware. You just need to bring your food and settle in.

Why Our Guests Keep Coming Back

It's not the fancy extras that make people return year after year - it's knowing that everything simply works. No nasty surprises, no "oh, we don't have that" moments, no parking dramas. Just straightforward, well-thought-out accommodation where you can get on with enjoying yourselves. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Everything You Need in the Kitchen

Let's be honest - nobody wants to arrive at a holiday cottage only to find you can't cook a proper meal. Our kitchen is different.

There's a full-sized fridge-freezer, an oven and hob, microwave, kettle, and toaster. You'll find proper cooking equipment in the cupboards - pans of all sizes, baking trays, a full set of cutlery and crockery, mixing bowls, the lot. We've even thought about the boring stuff like tea towels, kitchen roll, and washing-up liquid.

The only thing we don't have is a dishwasher, but with two bathrooms and a well-stocked kitchen, you'll have everything else you need to make yourselves at home.

Bring Your Four-Legged Friend

Your dog is part of the family, so why leave them behind? We welcome pets at no extra charge.

Whilst we don't have a secure garden, there are brilliant walks right on your doorstep in the village, and Durham itself has lovely riverside paths. We just ask that your furry friend doesn't hop on the beds, and that you clean up after them (but you'd do that anyway).

Over the years, we've had all sorts of dogs stay - from tiny terriers to gentle giants. They've all enjoyed exploring the local area, and their owners have loved not having to arrange kennels or worry about leaving them behind.

Right in the Heart of Village Life

Sherburn Village isn't some sleepy backwater where you'll struggle to find a pint of milk. It's a proper, thriving village with everything you need on your doorstep.

There's a Co-op that's open from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week. You'll find a bakery for your morning pastries, a post office, a chemist, and even a Chinese takeaway for nights when you can't be bothered to cook. Several pubs are within walking distance if you fancy a drink without getting back in the car.

The cottage sits on the main street but tucked back from the road, so you get all the convenience without any of the noise.

Durham City and the North East Coast

Durham city centre is only three miles away - close enough to pop in whenever you fancy, but far enough that you're not paying city prices or dealing with city parking.

Before you even reach Durham, you'll pass a retail park with every supermarket you could need, plus Home Bargains, Iceland, Aldi, and more. Durham itself needs no introduction - the cathedral, the castle, the riverside walks. It's all there waiting for you.

Fancy a day at the coast? The Durham Heritage Coast is just a 10-minute drive. Beamish Museum isn't far either, and you're well-placed for exploring the whole North East.

Easy, Stress-Free Check-In

We know the last thing you need after a long journey is complicated check-in arrangements.

The cottage has a smart lock on the door, so you'll get your access code a few days before you arrive. Just turn up when it suits you, tap in the code, and you're in. No waiting around for key handovers, no rushing to arrive at a specific time.

When you leave, just close the door behind you. That's it. Simple.

Parking Sorted

There's free parking right at the cottage - no permits, no time limits, no stress. Whilst there isn't a traditional driveway, there's a space at the front where you can tuck your car in safely. There's also free street parking throughout the village if you need extra space.

People often ask about electric vehicle charging. We don't have an EV charger on-site at the moment, but there are public charging points in Durham if you need them.

Perfect Location for

Durham University Families

Visiting your son or daughter at Durham? Coming up for graduation? We know how important these visits are, and we've made the cottage perfect for families making the trip.

You'll have enough space for parents, siblings, grandparents, and even the family dog (more on that below). It's just a short journey into Durham, so you can easily pop in and out for meals, ceremonies, or just catching up. After a busy day, you'll love having somewhere comfortable to come back to where everyone can spread out properly.

Many of our guests are Durham families who return year after year. They know they'll get a warm welcome, plenty of space, and none of the hassle of cramped hotel rooms or expensive city centre rates.
